Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my weighted grade?
To calculate your weighted grade, multiply each assignment score by its weight (as a percentage of the total), then add all the weighted scores together. For example, if you scored 90% on an exam worth 40% of your grade and 80% on homework worth 60%, your weighted grade is (90 × 0.40) + (80 × 0.60) = 36 + 48 = 84%. This calculator does the math for you automatically.
What is a weighted average?
A weighted average is a calculation that gives different values (assignments, exams, projects) different levels of importance based on their weight. Unlike a simple average where every score counts equally, a weighted average reflects that some assignments matter more than others toward your final grade. For example, a final exam worth 50% of your grade has more impact than a quiz worth 5%.
How do letter grades work?
Letter grades correspond to percentage ranges on a standard grading scale: A (93–100%), A- (90–92%), B+ (87–89%), B (83–86%), B- (80–82%), C+ (77–79%), C (73–76%), C- (70–72%), D (60–69%), and F (below 60%). Some schools may use slightly different scales, but this is the most common system used in the United States.
